About This Product

Raw Urushi (Ki-urushi)

Raw urushi is the sap harvested from the urushi tree, filtered to remove impurities. In kintsugi, it serves as the foundation for repairs and is used in virtually every step, from bonding cracks to filling chips.

A Rare, Natural Adhesive

Urushi is a rare material—only about 200g can be harvested from a single urushi tree that has been cultivated for 15–20 years—making it essential for kintsugi. As a natural material, once fully cured, it is food-safe and can be used on tableware with confidence.

Uses in Kintsugi

Raw urushi is used in nearly every step of kintsugi: bonding cracks, filling chips, smoothing small gaps, and middle coating. It can be mixed with wheat flour, polishing powder, or wood powder to create adhesives and fillers, or combined with black powder or bengala powder to make colored lacquer.

Recommended For

This product is recommended for those who already practice kintsugi and need a replacement—whether you have run out of raw urushi or your supply has passed its one-year shelf life. For beginners who have not yet started kintsugi, we recommend purchasing a kintsugi kit that includes all the necessary tools.

What is Kintsugi?

Kintsugi—— a traditional Japanese restoration technique passed down for over 500 years. Broken vessels are carefully joined with urushi, a natural lacquer, and finished with gold. Rather than hiding the seams, kintsugi highlights them, giving the piece renewed life through its golden lines.

At the heart of this practice lies wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in the imperfect and the transient. Rather than seeing breakage as a flaw, it is regarded as a unique chapter in the vessel’s story. Kintsugi philosophy offers a quiet sense of healing in our modern lives.
